In the ongoing process of expelling Afghan migrants from Iran, many who have returned to Afghanistan report a resurgence of discrimination against Afghan nationals in that country.
The majority of Afghan citizens who have voluntarily or forcibly returned from Iran complain of insults, beatings, and humiliation at the hands of Iranian police.
Ahmadullah Zaki is one such Afghan migrant who has returned voluntarily to Afghanistan. He states, “Three years ago, I went to Iran due to economic difficulties and the lack of employment opportunities, hoping to provide a livelihood for my family. However, conditions for Afghans in Iran have become increasingly dire with each passing day. They refer to us as foreigners and harbour disdain for us. Upon returning to our own country, Afghan migrants are subjected to humiliation by Iranian police. If we are not compelled to leave, why should we allow our dignity to be trampled in such a manner?”
Numerous migrants report that in certain areas of Iran, banners have been put up warning Afghan nationals to voluntarily leave the country or face expulsion.
Maryam Anwari, another Afghan migrant who has returned from Iran, echoes similar sentiments, expressing her grievances regarding the insults and indignities she has faced from both Iranian citizens and police.
“Now that we have returned to our homeland, I am deeply concerned about my children’s future and their education. Life in Iran has been incredibly challenging over the past few years. The treatment of Afghans there has been extremely harsh, with some referring to our youth as ‘filthy worms.’ For instance, when they bring us into camps, they address us as filthy worms and force us to berate one another. I hold no satisfaction or gratitude for Iran,” Maryam Anwari said.
Reports indicate that some migrants who were recently expelled through the Spin Boldak route in Kandahar have been arrested by Pakistani forces despite possessing valid documentation, enduring torture and inhumane treatment in detention.
This comes at a time when the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation of Afghanistan has announced that 9,730 Afghan migrants have been expelled from Iran and Pakistan between July 9 and July 12.
