Local sources have reported the arrest of Mohammad Anwar Panahi, a university professor, by the Taliban’s intelligence service.
Sources confirmed to the Afghan Women’s News Agency on Monday, July 22, that Panahi was apprehended on Saturday, July 20, in the Pul-e-Sorkh area of Kabul, near Ibn Sina Private University, and has been transferred to an undisclosed location.
Images of Mr. Panahi that have surfaced depict his face covered in blood, and sources further indicate that Taliban intelligence agents brutally assaulted the professor.
According to the sources, the Taliban had previously threatened Panahi on grounds of alleged collaboration with foreign media, and the exact reasons for his current arrest remain unclear.
The Taliban has previously detained and imprisoned several university professors on various pretexts.
