The World Food Programme (WFP) has announced that the crises in Afghanistan have led to women and girls bearing the brunt of immense pressure, finding themselves in increasingly difficult circumstances.
In a statement shared on its X social media page, the organization noted that women and girls in Afghanistan have access to a minimal amount of food, and as humanitarian assistance dwindles, their access to essential provisions has deteriorated further. The World Food Programme further emphasized that Afghanistan ranks among the most challenging countries in the world for women.
Meanwhile, families in need of humanitarian assistance report that they are in dire economic conditions and struggle significantly to secure food for both day and night.
Zahragul, a destitute woman who bears the responsibility of supporting her family, states that in the past, they received more aid; however, now, not only are they receiving less assistance, but on certain nights, they go to with empty stomachs.
“In the current circumstances, obtaining a morsel of bread is exceedingly. On certain days when I have no income, we are forced to sleep with empty stomachs at night. Since the loss of my husband, our economic troubles have intensified, and I have been compelled to seek work. Each day, I go to homes to do cleaning, but the meagre earnings I receive are insufficient to meet my family’s needs. In the past, we would at least receive some assistance, but now, no one seems to care for us,” Zahragul lamented.
Zahragul serves as a poignant example of the plight faced by impoverished women in Afghanistan, who, despite shouldering the responsibility of their families, have minimal access to adequate food and basic living necessities.
This comes at a time when, not long ago, the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security, and the Peace Research Institute Oslo released a joint report stating that Afghanistan is the worst country for women and girls, ranking last among 177 nations.
The joint report from these two organizations highlights the conditions of women across 13 indicators, including justice and security, education, maternal mortality, employment, systemic violence, and gender-based violence.
