More than a year has passed since the closing of university gates to female students in Afghanistan. A large number of these aspiring scholars have been concerned about their future and have been urged to consider their educational fate and reopen the university gates.
Shabnam Rasouli, a student of dentistry, is one of many students who, like hundreds of other girls, have been deprived of attending university due to restrictions. However, she is urging for the reopening of university gates.
“It has been almost two years since we have been far from lessons and university, we have become sedentary, and all these restrictions have put us in a bad mental state. Although I try to continue my studies online, studying online never replaces the presence in the classroom and university,” Shabnam said.
These students argue that education is the right of all girls and that the university gates should be opened to them so they can continue their studies like boys.
Somaia Rezaei, another student has been busy learning the art of sewing in one of the workshops after the closing of universities to girls.
“When the university gates closed to girls like the doors of schools, I lost all hope and even experienced a period of depression. However, I realized that I would not achieve anything by staying at home. I, too, wanted to find an occupation for myself. Currently, I am learning tailoring in one of the workshops so that I can have my own workshop in the future. However, alongside this, I remain hopeful that the university gates will open to female students as soon as possible,” Somaia said.
After more than a year since the announcement of the Ministry of Higher Education regarding the closure of universities to female students, some female students argue that education is their human and civil right, and girls should have equal rights as boys to education and progress.
While 1023 days have passed since the closure of girls’ schools to girls above the sixth grade and almost years since the closure of university gates to female students, it remains uncertain when and under what conditions girls will return to their classrooms. No information is available at this time regarding whether or not girls will be able to attend classes again.
