Assistance from the World Food Programme for 9.3 million Women in Afghanistan

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has released a report stating that in 2023, it distributed aid to 18.6 million individuals in Afghanistan, comprising 9.3 million women and girls, along with approximately 5.8 million individuals with disabilities.

Additionally, the World Food Programme has provided emergency food assistance to over 260,000 vulnerable individuals in Afghanistan over the past nine months.

The report highlights the World Food Programme has prioritized some of the most vulnerable families, including female-headed households without male breadwinners, families with nine or more members, including the elderly or individuals with disabilities, displaced families, and those left with no option but to resort to begging or borrowing for survival.

These humanitarian aids from the World Food Programme have been distributed to families in the provinces of Badghis, Bamyan, Farah, Ghor, Helmand, Herat, Kabul, Kandahar, Kapisa, Khost, Kunar, Laghman, Nangarhar, Nuristan, Paktika, and Urozgan.

According to the organization’s report, nearly half of those who received assistance have achieved an acceptable level of food consumption.

Based on statistics provided by the United Nations, 23.7 million individuals in Afghanistan need humanitarian assistance. The Women, Peace, and Security Working Group previously reported that approximately 80 percent of those in need of humanitarian aid are women and girls.

This assistance comes at a time when humanitarian aid has diminished due to restrictions placed on aid organizations in Afghanistan, and the World Food Programme has been facing budget shortages to continue its operations. Over the past three years, various factors, including unemployment, have contributed to the rising number of individuals requiring humanitarian assistance.
