Concerns Among Girls About an Uncertain Future Without Education in Badghis

Several schoolgirls in Badghis province are profoundly anxious about the uncertainty of their futures, asserting that education is their fundamental human right and that the doors of schools must be reopened to all girls. The continued closure of girls’ schools has generated significant apprehension among female students. Despite repeated appeals from the international community and human rights organizations for the reopening of girls’ schools, there has not been any tangible outcome in response to these demands.

Karima, a school girl says: “The closure of girls’ schools not only harms education and the future of girls but will also have detrimental consequences for the social and economic development of the country. I am extremely worried about the future; I have even developed depression, and at times, I don’t know how to cope with this situation.”

Some of these girls express that the educational restrictions imposed on girls in Afghanistan represent a concerning and complex issue that carries profound social, economic, and cultural implications.

Sajida, another girl who has been deprived of attending school, states, “This situation poses serious challenges for the youth and the future of the country, as it robs of opportunities for personal and social growth and development. When I contemplate the idea of not being able to attend university after school, I feel as though I am overwhelmed by anxiety, oscillating between despair and a longing for hope.”

Several female school teachers express concern regarding the continued closure of schools for girls above the sixth grade, stating that the persistence of this situation is exceedingly troubling, they emphasize that since the pursuit of knowledge is an obligation for both men and women, the educational future thousands of girls should not be overlooked.

It has now been 1,084 days since the closure of schools for girls above the sixth grade in Afghanistan, yet no actions have been taken to facilitate their school’s reopening.
