On the occasion of its tenth anniversary in the field of education, the Malala Foundation has once again expressed alarm regarding the ongoing restrictions on girls’ access to education in Afghanistan.
The announcement states that the foundation supports women’s rights activists in Afghanistan who are advocating for the recognition of gender apartheid in international laws.
Meanwhile, a significant number of female students have expressed their concerns regarding the ongoing restrictions on girls’ education, stating that the uncertainty surrounding their future has dampened their motivation to pursue a better life.
Salma Fazli, a previous student from the Faculty of Medical Science, says, “It is exceedingly difficult for me that after hard work, perseverance, and separation from my family, I am now compelled to abandon my aspirations, and I feel that I have become a burden to my family.”
She adds that despite the numerous economic hardships her family has faced and the traditions that opposed her education, she has managed to draw closer to her dreams after much struggle. However, due to the imposed restrictions, she can no longer continue her studies or achieve her goals.
Asra Moradi, a schoolgirl who, like others, has been barred from attending school for the past three years, recounts her experience.
“During these three years of deprivation from education, I have endured incredibly challenging days. Each morning upon waking, I wished I hadn’t awakened, as anxiety about the future and my deteriorating mental state led me to despair. Yet, amid these hardships, I continued to hold onto the hope and longing for the day when we can all return to our studies,” Asra said.
Following the imposition of restrictions on women and girls in Afghanistan, organizations report that approximately 80 percent of Afghan girls have been deprived of their education.
Recently, the Malala Foundation announced a contribution of $1.5 million aimed at supporting girls’ education in Afghanistan. It is reported that over the past decade, this foundation has reached out to 21.8 million students across various countries.
