Afghanistan, a nation with a rich history and diverse culture, has encountered numerous challenges in recent years. Among the most significant and evident of these challenges is the plight of women in the realms of trade and business.
Despite the prevailing restrictions, Afghan women have managed to play a pivotal role in the country’s economy through their endeavors. Many have succeeded in emerging as entrepreneurs and businesswomen, making a notable impact in both local and international markets while contributing to the economic structures of the nation.
Maryam Akbari, one of the businesswomen, states that one of the greatest challenges faced by female entrepreneurs in Afghanistan is the social and cultural laws and restrictions.
“Limited access to education, travel restrictions, and legal barriers to registering businesses and acquiring capital and resources are among the challenges we women face in the of trade,” Maryam said.
Razia Samadi, another businesswoman, believes that access to financial resources poses one of the most significant challenges for female entrepreneurs.
She remarks, “Many financial institutions and banks, due to traditional outlooks, are reluctant to grant loans to women. This situation hinders women’s ability to start or expand their businesses, adversely affecting their economic empowerment.”
Women entrepreneurs in Afghanistan also face challenges in establishing social and professional networks. Limited access to necessary information and experiences, particularly in remote areas, leads to their isolation and causes them to miss out on potential job opportunities.
Parisa Karimi, a newcomer to the world of business, asserts that women must focus on building both local and international connections and enhancing knowledge and skills through workshops, training programs, and conferences to expand their businesses professionally.
Most women employed in Afghanistan bear the responsibility of supporting their families and generating income through their endeavors. Despite the various restrictions imposed on women’s employment over the past three years, female entrepreneurs persist in their efforts to continue their work.
