The Provincial Committee for the Rectification of Inscriptions, by the Taliban Ministry of Culture and Information, began its activities in the city of Mazar-e-Sharif, the capital of Balkh Province.
This is tasked with reviewing inscriptions in all 34 provinces that, according to the Taliban, are not compatible with the commonly spoken language and literature.
Over the past nearly three years, the group has repeatedly expressed hostility in the Persian language, such as removing the word “Danishgah”, equivalent to university, from the inscriptions of academic institutions.
In Afghanistan, many have been written on inscriptions that are more with Latin literature, for which no action has been taken to replace them.
Upon visiting the city, one may encounter the following words: “supermarket,” “laboratory,” and “clinic,” which could be better replaced with Persian words.
Instead of using the Persian word “Istgah” for the station, an imported word “Hada” from tribal areas of Pakistan is used.
It seems that the Taliban has a greater sensitivity towards Persian words than tolerating these words unless otherwise justified.
