End of the Third Doha Meeting on Afghanistan without the Presence of Afghan Women Representatives

The Third Doha Meeting on Afghanistan hosted by the United Nations, which faced widespread protests from women, civil society institutions, human rights activists, and anti-Taliban political activists, concluded without the presence of women. Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN Deputy Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Peacemaking announced in a press conference after the conclusion of the Third Doha Meeting that the negotiations were explicit and fruitful, with serious emphasis on the rights of Afghan women and girls.

“The concerns and perspectives of Afghan women and civil society were at the center of attention of the United Nations before this meeting, and the presence of women in political and peace processes is a guiding principle for this organization,” DiCarlo said.

Meanwhile, Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesperson, stated on his X page that the main Doha meeting ended after the presentation of reports by the Taliban delegation and separate meetings with diplomats from participating countries in this meeting.

The Third Doha Meeting took place on June 30th and July 1st without the presence of representatives of Afghan civil society and women’s rights activists, with the participation of the Taliban delegation and representatives from more than 25 countries worldwide. This sparked numerous national and international criticisms and reactions.
