Fawzia Koofi: “We Will No Longer Accept Afghan Women as Victims”

Fawzia Koofi, a former member of the previous Afghan Parliament, expressed during the largest three-day gathering of Afghan women in Albania, attended by over a hundred Afghan women, including women’s rights activists and journalists, that indifference towards the prevailing conditions is simply unacceptable.

On Wednesday, September 11, during her remarks at a conference in Tirana the capital of Albania, which focused on the role of women in Afghanistan’s policies, Koofi stated: “With each passing day, stricter laws are imposed on women, the latest law has been being the final nail in the coffin of women’s rights in Afghanistan—an edict recently endorsed by the Taliban’s Ministry of Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.”

“We will no longer accept Afghan women as mere victims; we recognize Afghan women as individuals who are not only survivors but also champions,” Koofi said.

During this gathering, Koofi also urged Afghan women to unite under the umbrella of solidarity and strive for the betterment of their country. She articulated that the purpose of this conference was to examine the situation in Afghanistan, particularly concerning women, to outline their political, economic, and human rights perspectives, and to delineate the future political landscape for Afghan women.

This conference, supported by Albania, Spain, and Switzerland, is set to continue for two more days.
