The Taliban’s Supreme Court has announced the execution of corporal punishment on four individuals, including two women and two men, in the provinces of Takhar and Logar.
A woman and a man in the Farkhar district of Takhar were sentenced to 39 lashes for the charge of adultery, while in Logar, two others received a sentence of four months in prison along with 35 to 39 lashes for the same accusation.
The implementation of these punishments signifies a resurgence of public corporal punishment in Afghanistan following the Taliban’s ascendance in power.
Human rights organizations view these actions as violations of international law and human dignity, calling for an end to such punitive measures. However, the Taliban assert that they are merely enforcing the tenets of Sharia law.
