September 8 International Literacy Day, a designation established by the United Nations to combat illiteracy. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) commemorated the occasion today, Sunday, by publishing a message on its Facebook page, stating that Literacy is a fundamental human right.
The organization further stated, “Promoting education in various languages facilitates understanding, social mobilization, and peace, thereby empowering individuals to advocate for their rights.”
This comes at a time when, for the past three years, female students and schoolgirls in Afghanistan have been deprived of their right to education.
Recently, a representative of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) declared that the Taliban have denied approximately 1.4 million women and adolescent girls in Afghanistan the right to education.
According to him, “The restrictions imposed by the Taliban on Afghan women aid workers have added a layer of complexity to the humanitarian process in Afghanistan. Furthermore, approximately 1.4 million women and adolescent girls remain banned from education.”
Over the past three years, Afghanistan experienced significant changes, particularly regarding the participation of women and girls in society, with the exclusion of female students and scholars from education emerging as one of the most pressing challenges during this period.
