Women in Afghanistan are increasingly concerned about the mounting limitations that have taken hold of the media landscape. Following the political upheaval in the country many media outlets have found themselves under significant pressure. Women journalists, who have made considerable strides in recent years, grapple with a myriad of professional challenges.
With the imposition of new restrictions, many women have not only been deprived of their job opportunities but, in some instances, have also been barred from entering workplaces. This circumstance has created a disheartening environment for women engaged in journalism.
Marzia (a pseudonym), one of the female journalists, expresses her concern over the current situation stating: ”The working conditions for media and journalists are becoming increasingly challenging day by day. In several provinces of the country, it has been reported that live images of the deceased should not be published. We have struggled for years to attain these opportunities; these restrictions not only impact us but will also have severe consequences for society at large.”
Sahar (a pseudonym), another female journalist, says: ”Media is a fundamental and crucial pillar of any society, and journalists strive to reflect what is necessary for dissemination and to address the issues faced by the public Women have also made significant and impactful contributions in this field, and I sincerely hope that the current restrictions do not further impede their efforts.”
Moreover, security concerns have cast a shadow over the activities of female journalists. Given the current circumstances, many refrain from continuing their work due to fears of threats and harassment.
Human rights activists are urging the international community to pay closer attention to the plight of women in Afghanistan and emphasize the importance of supporting female journalists. They assert that the media plays an essential role in the advancement and awareness of society, and restricting their activities equates to limiting access to the truths and information vital for the populace.
These concerns arise amid reports that recently, the implementation of a ban on the publication of images of living beings, as stipulated in the law on Promotion of Virtue by the Taliban, has commenced in several provinces of the country and is gradually being enforced.
