In the continuation of escalating pressures against Afghan refugees in Iran, a recent photo has emerged showing a banner displayed in the window of a bakery, indicating a ban on selling bread to Afghan nationals. This development has sparked considerable reactions.
The banner states, “By order of the prosecutor, the sale of bread to foreigners is prohibited, and any violation will result in repercussions for the respective bakery under applicable regulations
On Friday, September 13, Rasul Mousavi, the Director General of South Asia at the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, commented on this prohibition on his social media platform X: “On the simple unadorned doorway of the complete mystic, Sheikh Abul Hassan Kharaqani, it was inscribed: ‘Whoever enters this abode, provide them with bread and do not question their faith. For he who is worthy of life in the presence of the Almighty shall certainly be deserving of bread at the table of Abul Hassan.’ What has become of us with this history, culture, literature, and mysticism that we have fallen to such a state?”
However, the public prosecutor of Bardsir has denied this, stating, “light of public dissatisfaction regarding congestion at the subsidized bread lines across the city, an instruction has been issued to foreigners to obtain subsidized bread from designated bakeries within the refugee camps, which utilize subsidized flour sell bread at government-regulated prices.”
The prosecutor of Bardasir also ordered the removal of this banner and further added, “Unfortunately, there was a lack of sensibility conveying the judicial order, and the complete text of the announcement was not included.”
This coincides with reports that Iranian authorities have accelerated the expulsion of Afghan refugees in recent days. Furthermore, citizens in various regions of the country have recently staged protests against Afghan refugees, during which anti-refugee slogans were chanted, and the public was urged to refrain from providing services to these asylum seekers.
