Since the regaining of power by the Taliban, girls have been barred from attending schools, although they were initially allowed to enroll in private educational centers. However, in a recent development, the Education Directorate of Herat has issued a decree prohibiting girls above the sixth grade from attending educational centers until further notice.
Under the Taliban’s management, the Education Directorate of Herat Province has directed its relevant offices, referencing a decree from the Taliban Department of Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice and an edict from the group’s leader, to prevent girls above the sixth grade from accessing educational facilities as well.
Following the widespread dissemination of this decree by the Taliban in Herat, both girls and head of educational centers in other provinces have expressed their concerns, fearing that this new edict may be implemented nationwide.
Unofficial sources indicate that the leadership of this group intends to limit girls’ education to only the fourth grade. Afghanistan remains the sole country in the world where girls and women have entirely lost their right to education and learning.
