Girls in Kabul: Rising Threats and Restrictions Following the Taliban’s New Law

Several girls in Kabul have reported to the Afghan Women’s News Agency that the Taliban has imposed numerous restrictions on girls and women in the city following the ratification of the Law on the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.

Fatima, a resident of Kabul, says: “My father was killed during the fall at Kabul, and the responsibility of supporting the family has fallen upon me. Now, the Taliban has implemented a new law in the city, which forces me to go to with a sense of fear and trepidation.”

“Yesterday, while I was traveling along the Pul-e-Sukhta road in the western part of Kabul, the enforcers of morality from the Taliban stopped me and inquired about my destination. When I explained my route, they asked, ‘Why are you wearing sunglasses?’ I replied that I have an eye condition and need sunglasses to shield myself from the sunlight. They retorted, ‘What does a doctor know?’ They proclaimed that wearing sunglasses is forbidden for women, as it enhances their beauty and, should a man’s gaze fall upon you, it constitutes a sin. They warned that henceforth, if you continue to wear sunglasses, you will be referred to the office of morality enforcement.”

She further adds, “I am truly disheartened by fact that, without any justifiable reason and while fully observing my hijab, was halted in the presence of numerous men at Pul-e-Sukhta merely for wearing sunglasses, which has significantly tarnished my reputation. I find myself in fear that tomorrow I may be summoned their office without any grounds. Should this situation persist, I may be compelled to resign from my position, despite the heavy burden of responsibility for a family that relies solely on me for its sustenance.”

Like Fatima, thousands of girls across the country suffer from the enactment of this new law; when envisioning their future, they express that it appears daunting and fraught with anguish.

The new law imposed by the Taliban has astonishingly restricted the citizens of Afghanistan, with even men suffering under its constraints. It has been decreed that without a beard, hat, and turban, no individual is permitted to participate in government offices.

This group has even prohibited the recitation of the Holy Quran by women in public gatherings, deeming their voices and appearances to be awra.
