Increase in Online Businesses Among Girls Deprived of Education in Afghanistan

Following the restrictions on girls’ education in Afghanistan, some of them have turned to small businesses such as online buying and selling, aiming to create a source of income for themselves.

Mursal Rahimi, one of the students who started the online business after the university gates were closed, said: “When the gates of the university were closed to girls, I was in my third year of economics major. The days of depression when I could no longer continue my studies were difficult. However, I did not lose hope, and it has been a year since I started my online buying and selling business. I can at least cover my expenses.”

Soraya Ahmadi sells books online and aims to promote the culture of reading in society, among marginalized girls, alongside earning income.

“I started an online business and wanted to sell books to facilitate reading while girls are deprived of attending schools and universities. I aim to create a conducive environment for reading and promote the culture of reading books. I am a university student myself and after being confined at home, I decided to start a business that would be a source of income for myself, so that I can on myself in the future,” Soraya said.

Some customers of online shops managed by girls say that this work has made it easier for them to access their needed supplies, and they believe that supporting them will contribute to the growth of girls in society.

Female university and school students in Afghanistan, after facing restrictions, being deprived of their right to education, and being homebound, have led to the majority of them experiencing psychological and emotional illnesses.

Alongside the existing challenges, some of these girls have turned to various professions such as tailoring and painting and have launched online businesses selling various products including hygiene items, cosmetics, bags and shoes, clothing, decorative items, and books.
