Local sources from Bamyan province informed the Afghan Women’s News Agency that, based on a recent decision by the Taliban Ministry of Economy, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and international organizations have been mandated to refrain from hiring women and girls and to block their activities in the offices. This decision has halted the activities of women in all NGOs and associations in Bamyan province.
Sayed Ali, the director of one of the NGOs in Bamyan, told the Afghan Women’s News Agency: “According to the new decree of Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada, the leader of the Taliban, women’s activities in our organization and other NGOs in this province have been completely stopped, and starting from Monday, December 31, all women have been laid off from the organizations.”
Furthermore, a new survey published by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) states that women’s activities in NGOs in Afghanistan are facing serious challenges. The survey highlights that only 52% of Afghan women can travel to provide assistance in various parts of the country, a decrease from 64% in September of last year.
OCHA also announced that 43% of aid organizations have reported that some female employees have been forced to leave their jobs due to the Taliban’s harsh orders. The law on the promotion of virtue and prevention of vice of the Taliban has become a significant challenge, preventing women and girls from engaging in activities at these organizations.
Since the Taliban’s reestablishment of control over the country in 2021, this group has imposed strict policies against women and girls. Restrictions and challenges in education, health, employment, recreational activities, mobility, travel, and even sports for women have become prominent features of the Taliban regime.
It is noteworthy that Bamyan province, with a rich history of culture and education, is recognized as one of the important areas of the country, which is now affected by these decisions. Such restrictions pose a serious threat to the rights and job opportunities of Afghan women and have raised deep concerns among the country’s citizens.
