Increasing Pressure on Visual Media in Afghanistan

The Taliban’s Ministry of Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice has announced the launch of a campaign against the taking of videos and photographs, deeming such practices unlawful according to Sharia.

Furthermore, Mohammad Yousuf Ahmadi, the general director of Afghanistan National Television under Taliban control, stated in a meeting with other officials of the network, in accordance with the directive of the Taliban leader and the group’s laws on virtue promotion and vice prevention, no budget will be allocated to this television station for the upcoming financial year.

Sources within the Taliban-controlled National Television report, quoting Ahmadi, the general director of the network, that in the coming year, Radio Voice of Sharia will become a primary outlet for the group’s ideology, similar to the first period of rule.

The initiation of the campaign deemed by the Taliban as the ‘prohibition of taking photographs and videos’ coincides with a time when supporters and members of the group had significantly increased their dissemination of promotional images and videos following their resurgence in Afghanistan.

Notably, in no Islamic country has the taking of photographs and videos been declared unlawful based on the fatwas of prominent Sunni and Shia Muslim scholars.
