International Day of the Girl: Afghan Girls in the Shadow of Deprivation
  1. October 11 is celebrated worldwide as the International Day of the Girl. However, girls in Afghanistan find themselves in a critical and alarming situation. They are denied the right to education, learning, and employment.

According to reports, over 3 million girls in Afghanistan have been deprived of their right to education.

Several girls have developed psychological issues such as depression and anxiety due to the lack of access to educational and social facilities.

Kawsar, a fifth-grade student at the of the government’s collapse shared with a reporter from Afghanistan Women News Agency: “With the closing of school doors, all the girls in Afghanistan, especially my classmates, have been plunged into psychological turmoil. Just, my classmate Yelda called and asked if I could recommend a psychologist. I can’t sleep at night without medication and during the day, my mind is consumed by thoughts of school. My spirit feels utterly wilted. If schools were to reopen, my fellow Afghan girls and I would eagerly and passionately engage in learning and education.”

On the International Day of the Girl, we must listen to the voices of Afghan girls and remember that every girl has the right to live freely, pursue an education, and forge a bright future for herself. Neglecting rights is not only an injustice toward them but also a grave injustice to the future of Afghan society as a whole.

Despite facing numerous challenges and constraints, Afghan girls are striving to make their voices heard across the globe. They demand their rights to education, employment, and a life of freedom, urging the international community to pay attention to the critical plight of Afghan girls and to intensify political pressure on the Taliban.
