Millions of Individuals in Afghanistan to Confront a Severe Food Crisis and Harsh Winter Conditions

The World Food Programme (WFP) has sounded the alarm that with the onset of winter, millions of individuals in Afghanistan face acute shortages of food and heating supplies. Many struggling households are compelled to make the agonizing choice between procuring food for their children or purchasing fuel to warm their homes.

According to the World Food Programme report, approximately 14.8 million people in Afghanistan will require urgent assistance in the upcoming winter season. Additionally, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has indicated a need for an immediate budget of $603.5 million to address the needs of vulnerable regions.

Zarifa, a resident of Kabul and the sole breadwinner for her six-member family spoke to the Afghan Women’s News Agency, stating, “The upcoming winter is forecasted to be extraordinarily cold compared to previous years. In this frigid season, we have neither coal to heat our home nor wood. Our house is cold and in the shade, with even the water well having run dry. I am at a loss, wondering how to endure this bitter cold season with my young children, devoid of water, fuel, and food.”

Hundreds of families in Kabul and various provinces across the country will enter the upcoming winter lacking both fuel to warm their homes and sufficient food for even a single meal, living in abject poverty.

Relief organizations have projected that the forthcoming winter will be exceptionally challenging for the people of Afghanistan. It is reported that over 23 million individuals within the country require humanitarian assistance.
