The United Nations, in a survey on Wednesday, has revealed that 45 percent of Afghan women seek direct dialogue with the Taliban, while a mere 4 percent advocate for the formal recognition of this group as the legitimate government of Afghanistan.
In another segment of the survey, 90 percent of women expressed their grievances regarding psychological trauma and reported a rise in domestic violence since the Taliban regained power.
In this survey, 80 percent of women reported that they were unable to meet even with a low-ranking Taliban official to address their concerns. This survey was conducted by the offices of UNAMA and UN Women, revealing that the vast majority of women perceive themselves as the forgotten segment of society over the past three years due to the Taliban.
Since the Taliban’s return to power, this group has stripped women of their rights to education and employment, while also restricting their freedom of movement and opportunities for sport.
Women are now compelled to secure a male guardian for basic medical treatment, even when travelling as much as 72 kilometres from their homes.
This occurs in a context where nearly half a century of instability and conflict has left hundreds of thousands of women widowed, transforming them into the sole breadwinners of their households. The imposition of restrictions by the Taliban on women has exacerbated the challenges faced by this demographic.
