Richard Bennett: “In the past three months, the violation of human rights has seen an alarming rise”

During the fifty-seventh session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, the organization’s Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Afghanistan expressed grave concern regarding the current human rights situation, stating that the endorsement of the “Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice” has negatively impacted not only women but also various segments of society, compromising their fundamental rights.

Mr. Bennett, who has been banned from entering Afghanistan by the Taliban, stated that in the interval between two council sessions, Afghanistan has not witnessed any positive changes; rather, the human rights situation has deteriorated even further.

At the outset of this session, the United Nations Human Rights Commissioner expressed dissatisfaction with what they termed a comprehensive human rights crisis in Afghanistan, characterizing the severe poverty, difficulties in accessing healthcare, and systematic violations of the fundamental rights of citizens—including women, ethnic and religious minorities, individuals with disabilities, and sexual minorities—as profoundly alarming. They emphasized the need for a robust global response to the violations of human rights in Afghanistan.
