Richard Bennett’s Urges to Support Afghan Female Athletes

Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights for Afghanistan has called on both domestic and international entities to support Afghan female athletes.

Mr. Bennett has expressed in a message on his X page: “Afghan women and girls have the right to participate in sports. I urge sports organizations, both within and outside of Afghanistan to support them. I eagerly look forward to the inspiring of talented Afghan women and men in the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris 2024.”

These remarks by Mr. Bennett are in response to statements made by Attal Mashwani, the head of the Afghan Sports Department, who, in an interview with a French news agency, stated that the Taliban government does not recognize three Afghan female athletes who were supposed to participate in the Paris Olympics.

Some Afghan female athletes have expressed concern about the non-recognition of Afghan women athletes in the 2024 Paris Olympics, stating that female athletes have always been a source of pride in international arenas. They have called on Afghan sports officials and international bodies to support female athletes so that they can be represented in the best possible way.

It is planned that in the 2024 Paris Olympics, 6 athletes represent Afghanistan, including three male and three female athletes. However, the Afghan Sports Department has stated that it does not officially recognize the participation of female athletes in these Olympics.
