The Desire of Young Women to Migrate for Education Following Restrictions in Afghanistan

In the wake of the closure of schools and universities to girls in Afghanistan, the inclination towards migration of young women has surged to unprecedented levels The psychological and social stemming from this decision has profoundly impacted the futures of Afghan girls.

Shukria Mohammadi, a university student, has decided to migrate for the continuation of her studies following the closure of university doors to girls. She expresses, “Afghanistan is my homeland, but I no longer have the right to pursue my education here. I have decided to continue my studies in Germany through a scholarship, and I plan to leave in a few months. However, I hope one day all the girls in my country will be able to study freely.”

Following the prohibition of girls’ rights in Afghanistan, many have been subjected to immense psychological pressure. These restrictions have fostered feelings of hopelessness and a sense of futility among young women.

Maryam is another young woman aspiring to continue her education abroad. She states, “For a time, I studied online, but I feel that this approach will not allow me to achieve my goals. Therefore, I have decided to migrate. Although I understand that a challenging path lies ahead, it is certainly preferable to live a life of uncertainty here.”

Concurrently, families, driven by feelings of insecurity and concern for their children’s futures, are actively seeking migration opportunities for their daughters. They believe that through migration, their daughters can continue their education and forge an independent future.

These women are informed about educational conditions in other countries through social media and online communications, and they are pursuing new opportunities for better education and living conditions. However, only a small number of these girls possess the means to migrate and study abroad.

This trend towards migration is not exclusive to girls, yet the limited educational experiences and job prospects available to them have, in a way, generated a heightened demand for migration among this demographic.
