Following Donald Trump’s election as President of the United States, women’s rights activists in Afghanistan have expressed optimism that this new era will herald the end of terrorism and extremism in their country.
Tamana Zaryab Pariani, a women’s rights advocate, has called for an end to gender apartheid in Afghanistan on her Facebook page, stating, “We are weary of the endless war and the escalating darkness in the world.”
Mursal Osmani, another women’s rights activist, emphasized the negative consequences of the sudden withdrawal of the United States forces from Afghanistan, noting that this action has exacerbated extremism.
She also highlighted urgent issues such as displacement, increasing poverty, suicide, economic difficulties, violence against women, and forced marriages, calling for stringent measures against them.
Furthermore, some women and girls in Kabul remain hopeful regarding a second term for Trump, believing he might initiate changes within the Taliban regime that would pave the way for women and girls to reclaim their lost rights.
With eyes filled with hope, these women await the day when no barriers will obstruct their progress and flourishing, and their fundamental rights will be recognized and upheld.
These women are urging the forthcoming U.S. administration to refrain from providing financial aid, which they assert fuels terrorism and to pay greater attention to the critical of women and girls in Afghanistan.
However, there are also fears rooted in the bitter experiences of the past; the Doha Agreement and the release of Taliban officials from prison serve as reminders of whether such support could enable a resurgence of Taliban power. Could this optimism inadvertently pave the way for a return to an even darker era?
Amidst this, Afghan women, with hearts brimming with hope and conflicting thoughts, are in search of a brighter future. They recognize that hope and fear are intertwined, and to attain their basic rights, they must grapple with challenges and despair.
Can this optimism serve as a springboard for soaring toward freedom, or is it merely an illusion birthed from the depths of darkness?
