The Shift of Deprived Girls from Education Towards Online Commerce in Afghanistan

In recent years, Afghanistan has faced profound social and economic challenges, disproportionately affecting women and girls in significantly negative ways. One of these challenges is the deprivation of educational opportunities for girls.

In this context, it is observed that many girls are turning to online commerce instead of continuing their education.

Many families, struggling with unfavourable economic conditions, are unable to cover the educational costs for their daughters. In numerous regions, even basic expenses such as clothing, books, and transportation can impose a significant burden on families. As a result, young girls resort to working at home or engaging in online commerce to contribute, in whatever way they can, to the family’s income.

With the expansion of internet access and the rise of social media, young girls and women in Afghanistan are increasingly pursuing online business opportunities. This trend allows them to work from home and conveniently sell their products. From handicrafts to local garments and homemade goods, the online marketplace provides them with a platform for earning income and achieving financial independence.

Despite the significant advantages of this type of business, young girls face numerous challenges. Limited access to modern technologies, insufficient knowledge of business management, and negative cultural attitudes toward women’s work are among these obstacles.

Furthermore, the absence of financial and legal support can serve as a formidable barrier to the growth of these enterprises.

In this regard, several non-governmental organizations and global institutions are striving to assist Afghan girls and women. Through essential training in entrepreneurship, blogging, and digital skills, they are provided with the tools and resources necessary to thrive in this competitive market.

It has been 1,103 days since the closure of girls’ schools and nearly two years since female students have been barred from attending university. During this time, many female students and scholars have turned to various professions and activities, including the initiation of online businesses, to secure engagement and a source of income.
