The Taliban’s satisfaction with the onset of a new wave of bloodshed in Syria

In the past five days, the uprising against the Syrian government has become a headline in the media; however, must not be overlooked that the Syrian rebels have also garnered the support of the Taliban. Those who have taken up arms against the Syrians include citizens from twenty different countries, and it can be with certainty that they are receiving the same kind of support in terms of human resources that the Taliban received during their struggle against the previous system in Afghanistan.

Pakistan, under the illusion that it could secure its strategic depth by funding the Taliban in Afghanistan, supported the group against the previous government. However, during the past 40 months, relations between the Taliban and their primary political, financial, and military backer, Pakistan, have become fraught with tension. Similarly, Turkey is repeating Pakistan’s mistakes in Afghanistan by backing the armed opponents of the Syrian government, which ultimately exacerbates instability in Syria.

The Taliban’s delight in the strengthening of the opponents of the Syrian government can be seen as a display of ingratitude, as this group, after regaining control in Afghanistan, recalibrated its calculations to establish closer ties with Russia and Iran. The aforementioned countries have made efforts to reduce the Taliban’s global isolation. However, while the Taliban professes a slogan of “balanced policy” and speaks of neutrality in regional conflicts, they have, over the past five days, unequivocally demonstrated their satisfaction with the actions of the insurgents in Syria.

Previously, the Taliban have demonstrated their lack of sincerity in fostering constructive relationships with Russia and Iran. The armed attack on Chinese employees in Tajikistan, the deadly explosion in Kerman, Iran, and several similar incidents in neighbouring countries underscore the absence of honesty among the rulers in Kabul.

In the past five days, Syria has experienced some of its bloodiest, with approximately 2,000 individuals from both warring factions and Syrian civilians injured.

Amidst this turmoil, the presence of fighters bearing the insignia of the Islamic State poses a significant challenge, indicating that, should the Syrian government collapse terrorist groups would find their second haven in the world after Afghanistan.

Although instability in Sudan and Yemen has also provided these groups with opportunities for recruitment and increased financial resources, Syria is projected to be the second nation, three years after Afghanistan, susceptible to being managed by extremists. Consequently, Turkey, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, and Israel will become increasingly vulnerable.

The notion that opposition groups to the Syrian government can serve as protectors of Turkey’s interests contradicts diplomatic principles. While employing illegal armed groups may yield short-term benefits for Turkey, in the long run, it will inevitably face a surge in terrorist incidents similar to that experienced in Pakistan.

After five years of tranquillity, the armed opposition to the Syrian government resumed their attacks on government offices and military bases just five days ago.

The storming of the Iranian consulate in Aleppo, Syria’s largest northern city, evokes memories of the Taliban seizure of the Iranian consulate in Mazar-i-Sharif 26 years ago when the Taliban entered the consulate and executed Iranian diplomats. Now, a quarter-century later, Syrianents have breached the Iranian consulate in Aleppo, and had diplomats been present, they too would have likely been victims.

Those fighting in Syria were part of the Al-Qaeda network in 2012 and have expanded their ties with both Al-Qaeda and ISIS over the past twelve years. In conclusion, the Taliban’s solidarity with the insurgents in Syria stems from their shared ideology, mutual financial resources, and common human capital.
