Tragic Death of a Pregnant Woman Due to Lack of Health Services in Herat

Local sources in Herat province report that a pregnant woman lost her life during childbirth due to the absence of medical equipment, female doctors, and midwives.

This unfortunate incident occurred last Thursday at the Shir Bakhsh health center in the Adraskan district of Herat. Shir Bakhsh village is situated in a remote area of the Adraskan district, where the health center operates under the auspices of the ‘ADAA’ organization.

Access to healthcare services is a crucial factor in improving the well-being of pregnant mothers. However, in many remote areas, expect mothers face significant challenges in reaching health centers and accessing medical facilities, which can have irrevocable consequences for both maternal and child health.

Many mothers are deterred from seeking appropriate medical care due to the considerable distance from health centers or the prohibitive costs associated with such care. Furthermore, a lack of awareness and insufficient information regarding the importance of prenatal care are other influential factors that adversely impact these mothers’ healthcare decision-making.

Pregnant women in remote areas of the country encounter significant challenges due to inadequate infrastructure, including a lack of access to medical facilities, a shortage of specialized personnel, and the absence of suitable amenities for childbirth. These circumstances can lead to severe complications such as irregular, maternal and neonatal mortality, as well as long-term health issues for their children.
