Stephane Dujarric, the United Nations spokesperson, responding to the absence of women at the Doha summit, emphasized that the Doha meetings are part of a process and that women and civil society in Afghanistan are integral to these gatherings.
Mr. Dujarric, in his remarks to the Reuters news agency on Sunday, June 23, stated: “The Doha summit aims to encourage the current rulers of Afghanistan to engage with the international community through a coordinated and structured approach for the benefit of the people of Afghanistan. Human rights and the rights of women and girls will undoubtedly feature prominently in all discussions, as emphasized by the United Nations.”
The UN spokesperson made these remarks while just a few days ago, Human Rights Watch had reported that the UN had removed the discussion on women from the agenda of the third Doha summit.
Meanwhile, Roza Otunbayeva, the Special Representative of the United Nations in Afghanistan stated during a UN Security Council meeting that women will participate on the second day of the Doha summit in Qatar.
The third Doha meeting, hosted by the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Doha, Qatar, is set to take place in six days on June 30 regarding the situation in Afghanistan.
