UN: The Mental Health of Women in Afghanistan is Deteriorating

UN Women has published a report indicating that the mental health and emotional well-being of women in Afghanistan are worsening, with seven out of ten women suffering from psychological and emotional challenges.

The report further reveals that according to conducted surveys, 73 to 91 per cent of female respondents stated that their mental well-being has either diminished or significantly worsened. Additionally, many of them expressed that they feel utterly insecure when stepping outside their homes alone.

The situation of women and girls in Afghanistan is generally described as highly challenging, as they have historically faced numerous restrictions. Their access to education, healthcare, employment, and rights has been severely limited, resulting in the emergence of mental health issues, including depression, among women and girls.

The confinement to the home resulting from the closure of universities and secondary schools for girls beyond the sixth grade has led to a significant number of female students in Afghanistan suffering from mental health disorders, prompting them to seek treatment from psychologists.

Meanwhile, some psychologists warn that if this situation persists, the mental well-being of girls will deteriorate further, leaving lasting negative impacts. When half of a community lacks sound mental health, a truly healthy society cannot exist.
