With the closure of girls’ schools in Badghis province, several female teachers who have lost their positions are now confronting severe economic difficulties.
The girls’ schools in Badghis, known as one of the remote and underdeveloped regions of the country, played a significant role in the education empowerment of young women. Following the shutting of school doors to girls above the sixth grade, education opportunities have not only diminished for these girls, but female teachers, having lost their jobs, are now grappling with poverty and unemployment.
Zahra Akbari, a former teacher who taught higher grades at one of the girls’ schools, now finds herself in a difficult economic situation following her unemployment.
“Although my husband works, his income is quite modest. In the past, I also contributed by teaching, and my salary helped some of our financial burdens. However, now I am unemployed and often struggle to cover our daily expenses,” she lamented.
Many female educators in this province find themselves unable to pursue other job opportunities due to a lack of available employment options.
Suraya Ahmadi, another unemployed female teacher, states, “Educators traditionally relied on the income generated from teaching. However, now the employment conditions in other sectors are either unsuitable for us or many lack the necessary experience outside of teaching to secure an alternative source of income.”
The closure of girls’ schools has not only adversely affected the economic status of female educators but has had psychological repercussions on their morale. Many of them experience feelings of despair and anxiety, and they harbor concerns about their futures.
It has been three years since the doors of schools in Afghanistan were closed, and during this period, in addition to the prohibition on the education of girls above the sixth grade, numerous female educators have lost their jobs, many of whom were the primary breadwinners for their families.
