Unequal Distribution of Humanitarian Aid for Women in Afghanistan

Afghanistan, as one of the countries grappling with severe humanitarian and economic crises in recent years, is in dire of substantial humanitarian assistance. However, it has been reported the distribution of this aid, particularly for women, is occurring in an inequitable manner.

Several impoverished women in remote areas have voiced their grievances regarding the indifference of officials to the inequitable distribution of humanitarian aid among those in need, struggling in dire economic conditions.

Marzia, one such woman who bears the responsibility of caring for her family, decries the unjust allocation of humanitarian assistance.

She states, “The economic situation is severely deteriorating; we lack proper housing and shelter, and no one seems to care for us, the destitute. The aid that arrives is distributed to individuals who are acquainted with local representatives or those in positions of authority, while here, no one is concerned about the vulnerable and impoverished.”

The distribution of humanitarian aid in Afghanistan faces significant challenges that have led to the neglect of women. Many non-governmental organizations and international agencies have directed their attention to rural areas, often overlooking women living in urban or peripheral regions.

Sima, another impoverished woman responsible for her family’s welfare, expresses, “When you are a woman on your own, carrying the weight of family responsibilities is exceedingly difficult. Previously, at least a portion of our economic struggles could be alleviated through assistance, but we have not received aid for quite some time. Those who have connections are prioritized in receiving help, rather than those who are truly deserving.”

This comes at a time when women in Afghanistan have faced numerous challenges and restrictions over the past three years. The number of in need of humanitarian aid has surged, and alongside the deprivation of education, many of those who lost their jobs were the primary breadwinners for their families.
