UNESCO’s Support for Female Journalists in Afghanistan
UNESCO’s Support for Female Journalists in Afghanistan

UNESCO or the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization announced its support for journalists, especially female reporters, in Afghanistan by providing training and secure reporting resources on vital issues.

The organization has emphasized on its social media page that protecting journalists is crucial for democracy.

Furthermore, UNESCO intends to provide training opportunities for 880 journalists in Afghanistan, among whom 41.5% will be female.

This support from UNESCO comes at a time when over the past three years, a significant number of female journalists have left the country or abandoned their duties for various reasons, including restrictive conditions and the lack of professional opportunities in the media sector.

Recently, the United Nations released a report stating that female journalists in Afghanistan have faced even greater restrictions since the current government took power in the country.

Journalists in Afghanistan have always faced numerous challenges, among which female reporters have suffered the most. However, in the aftermath of the fall of the government, over the past nearly three years, these restrictions have increased, making the work of reporting and freedom of speech even more challenging than before.
