As the weather turns colder and winter approaches, several women workers, who are the primary breadwinners for their families, express that due to economic difficulties and the rising prices of essential foods, they are unable to purchase and prepare the necessities of life.
Basira is one of the women who works as a house cleaner, primarily laundering clothes to support her family.
“Every year as the weather begins to chill, I am consumed by sorrow at the thought of how we will survive the winter. Both poverty and winter prove to be incredibly arduous for us. As the head of my household, I am compelled to find at least a dry piece of bread for my children which is why I go to homes to do laundry; however, the money I earn is insufficient to meet our needs,” Basira said.
Following the imposition of restrictions on women’s employment, a significant number have lost their jobs and are now in severe economic difficulties.
Global organizations and institutions have expressed concern regarding the alarming situation of women, urging the Taliban government to lift these restrictions; however, to date, such responses have yielded no tangible results.
Samira is one of the women who works in a women’s tailoring shop to provide for her family’s expenses. Having lost her husband last year and having migrated from Nimroz to Herat province in search of work, she states, ”If you were able to see my home, you would find there is hardly a place to sit. I have two children, and I am compelled to work to feed them. As winter approaches, our problems only intensify due to the poverty and economic challenges we face.”
Women in Afghanistan have long been confronted with a myriad of challenges, ranging from familial and societal violence to restrictions on their right to education and human rights. However, now, many women who are the sole breadwinners of their families grapple with dire economic circumstances due to a lack of job opportunities and income sources.
