Women of Afghanistan Bound by the Strict Regulations of the Taliban

A group of protesting women affiliated with the ‘Purple Saturdays Movement’ have stated on their X social media page, vehemently condemning the current state of rights and freedoms for women and girls in Afghanistan under Taliban rule.

Members of this protest movement assert that, in the past three years, the Taliban’s ‘oppressive’ policies have turned Afghanistan into a prison for women and girls. The restrictions imposed by the Taliban, particularly concerning the education and employment of girls and women, have had detrimental effects, resulting in millions of girls being deprived of the opportunity to learn. These deprivations not only violate women’s rights but also hinder their participation in society and the economic development of the country.

The protesting women also highlighted the stringent restrictions imposed by the Taliban’s newly enacted laws, such as regulations dictating women’s attire and silencing their voices within society. They contend that these regulations foster an atmosphere of fear and, exacerbate gender discrimination. Women who defy the Taliban’s laws face severe punishments.

The Purple Saturdays Movement further asserts that access to healthcare services has significantly declined over the three years of Taliban rule, resulting in the dismissal of many female employees in this sector. This situation has not only adversely affected physical health but also psychological and emotional distress. The movement calls for an effective response from the international community to the actions of the Taliban, labelling these actions as a form of gender apartheid.
