Women’s Movement for Justice and Freedom: “We Will Sing for Freedom Again and Again”

The Women’s Movement for Justice and Freedom, in response to the newly enacted law by the Taliban, has proclaimed they will persist in their singing as a form of resistance against this group.

On Friday, the Justice for Freedom Movement held a protest gathering in a closed venue in Kabul and announced their condemnation of the Taliban through a video posted on their Twitter page, asserting the voices of women are not merely awrah but that women, like men, have the right to participate in all aspects of life, both inside and outside the home, and to raise their voices.

This movement emphasizes its commitment to continue the struggle against the Taliban’s law on the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, repeatedly their voices for their lost rights.

Recently, the Taliban enacted the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, which is currently done across the country. This law has imposed numerous restrictions on women and girls in Afghanistan, and men are also not exempt from its ramifications.

Article 13 of this law pertains specifically to women’s voices, stating that a woman is considered awrah and that women’s voices should not be heard in public or even in the recitation of the Holy Quran. Furthermore, it prescribes that women must cover their entire bodies. For men, it is deemed essential to maintain beards and wear caps and turbans at their workplaces; any individual who disobeys this mandate will face dismissal from their duties, along with severe consequences.

The Taliban’s new law has sparked widespread national and international reactions. Several protesting women have organized singing events in response to this law, both abroad and within Afghanistan.
