Several members of the women’s protest movement known as the Independent Alliance of Protest Movements have described August 15th as the darkest and most toxic day in the history of Afghanistan.
In a statement issued on August 13th, this movement declared that the Taliban, during their three years of governance, have forcibly prevented thousands of girls from pursuing their dreams and ambitions, compelling them at a young age into marriages against their will.
Throughout the three years of this group’s rule, women and girls have been stripped of their rights and privileges, effectively sidelined from all political, cultural, and social activities, leading to their confinement at home.
The protesting women, who have taken to the streets to reclaim their lost rights during this period, have been subjected to brutal torture and met with gunfire. This group has shown no restraint in employing any form of violence and oppression against the people of Afghanistan, particularly women and girls.
By flouting the laws of the country and disregarding human rights and values, the Taliban have enforced a law of the jungle in Afghanistan, threatening, torturing, suppressing, detaining, assaulting, and in some cases, thousands of former government soldiers.
This movement asserts that the Taliban have been responsible for the suicides of hundreds of young people over the past years, exacerbating domestic violence within Afghan society. Moreover, they have not only failed to alleviate the prevailing poverty, misery, and crises afflicting the nation but have also diverted substantial humanitarian aid and funds to their own forces.
This movement calls upon the international community human rights organizations, and institutions advocating for women and girls to hold the Taliban accountable for the oppression and tyranny imposed upon the people of Afghanistan, particularly against women and girls.
