Some women’s rights activists and movements advocating for women in Afghanistan claim that the statistics of women falling victim to Taliban violence are far greater than what has been reported by the US Department of State.

Zarifa Salangi, a member of the Afghan Women’s Justice Movement, states that the human rights situation, particularly the status of women in Afghanistan, is more dire than what is being portrayed in the media.

She further elaborates: “In addition to the reported cases of 16 women out of 90 being pregnant among the women detained by the Taliban, we have received dozens of other cases where women in remote areas of Afghanistan are subjected to torture, beatings, and arbitrary detention. It is not only women who suffer violence in this country, but young boys are also not safe from the Taliban’s atrocities and are subjected to sexual abuse.”

The Purple Sundays Movement, welcoming the annual report of the US Department of State on the human rights situation in Afghanistan under Taliban rule, asserts that the report reflects the human rights situation, abuse, and harassment of women prisoners in Afghanistan.

Members of this movement, endorsing the annual report of the US Department of State, emphasize that the conditions in Taliban prisons and the treatment of prisoners in their facilities are even more deplorable than what has been reflected in the report.

The statement continues: “We, in the Purple Sundays Movement, following our previous advocacy efforts, once again emphasize the need for maximum pressure and serious oversight on the prisons of this group, as these Taliban prisons are centres of torture and abuse, particularly towards women. Therefore, we demand maximum pressure and serious monitoring of the prisons of this group.”

In this statement, the Purple Sundays Movement calls on the United States government to withdraw its financial and moral support for the Taliban and sincerely exert pressure on them to end the suffering and anguish of the Afghan people.

The US Department of State’s annual report highlights widespread human rights violations and the suppression of civil and media freedoms in Afghanistan. The Taliban in this report are accused of extensive corruption and discrimination based on ethnicity, gender, and religion.

The report states that 90% of Taliban prisoners are political prisoners, and this group also holds accountable and seriously abuses the family members of those they consider suspects.
