Women in Badghis province are confronted with numerous challenges in terms of employment and social activities. Some of these women say that restrictions on women have led to most of them becoming unemployed and confined to their homes.
Badghis is one of the remote and underdeveloped regions in western Afghanistan where women face various challenges and constraints, especially in terms of employment opportunities.
Sabria Akbari, one of the women who served in a government office in Badghis province, has become unemployed following restrictions on women.
“In the past, conditions were better, I had a job, and our economic situation had improved. But now, I have become unemployed, and our economic problems have increased because a part of the household expenses relied on me, and I had to work because my husband does not have a stable job, and the money he earned was not sufficient for household expenses,” Sabria said.
It is said that some women who were working in this province and are now homemakers were the breadwinners of their families.
Shaima is one of the women who has experienced depression after becoming a homemaker. She says, “I used to work, had a good mental state, and our economic problems were fewer. But now, the living conditions are getting harder for us every day. Sometimes, I don’t even leave the house for several months and don’t see my neighbors. I feel like I am imprisoned within the four walls of the house. Every day, I lose hope for life and the future, and I feel like I have no motivation or enthusiasm for having a better future.”
Meanwhile, Fariba Rezaei, a psychologist, states that if the current conditions for women in Afghanistan continue, it can lead to negative psychological effects, including an increase in suicide among women and girls.
Unemployment among women in Badghis is one of the serious problems that, given the political and social conditions in Afghanistan, has created more challenges for women in this region.
In the past two and a half years, significant changes have occurred for women in Afghanistan. Schools and universities have been closed to girls, and work restrictions on women have caused a number of them, such as university professors and government employees, to leave their jobs.
