Zakia Wardak, the Afghan Consul General in Mumbai, India, resigned from her position after being accused of smuggling 25 kilograms of gold. These accusations emerged when Mrs Wardak was stopped at Mumbai airport while carrying the gold concealed in her jacket.

Mrs. Wardak announced her resignation on Saturday, May 3rd, on her social media page and stated: “Over the years, I have faced defamation against myself and my family. These seemingly organized attacks have had a profound impact on my performance in my role and signify numerous challenges that women advocating for change and transformation in Afghan society are grappling with.”

She further expressed deep regret that as the only woman present in Afghanistan’s diplomatic corps, instead of receiving constructive support to maintain this position, she has been subjected to organized attacks.

Reports suggest that the gold was smuggled from Dubai to India and hidden in Mrs. Wardak’s personal belongings. Due to her diplomatic passport and the immunity it provides, she was not arrested, but investigations into this case are ongoing.

Zakia Wardak was appointed as the Consul General of Afghanistan in Mumbai, India, during the previous government, by Ashraf Ghani, and has also worked as an advisor to the National Security Council in the country’s previous government.
