Some women artisans working in the handicrafts sector and female clothing vendors in Bamyan have informed the Afghan Women’s News Agency that the Taliban authorities have instructed them to cover the faces of mannequins and observe hijab for their clothing.

According to these women, the Taliban’s moral police first asked them to put masks on the faces of these mannequins to prevent sin. After complying with the Taliban’s order to mask the faces of the clothing mannequins, a few days later, the Taliban’s moral police demanded veiling for the dressed mannequins and warned that if the faces of the mannequins are not fully covered, they will be decapitated.

These female vendors added that before the Taliban’s coming to power, their sales were good, and most of their customers appeared to be foreign tourists. However, with the Taliban’s return to power, their sales have decreased, and people cannot afford to purchase these types of clothing due to the weak economy, unemployment, and high prices.

Currently, handicrafts and vending are the sole sources of income for women in Bamyan, which has also faded after the Taliban’s renewed dominance in Afghanistan. On the other hand, work restrictions imposed by this group have plunged the marketing and sales market of these small-scale vendors into a recession. These women suggest that this group should bring improvements to this situation, and international organizations should work more than ever on empowering women in the country.
