The World Bank has announced its contribution of $84 million to support Afghanistan in facing economic challenges and implementing livelihood projects in the country. On Wednesday, April 30, the World Bank stated in a press release that 70 million dollers of this assistance is intended to be allocated through the Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund (ARTF) and the International Development Association (IDA) to support livelihood projects in Afghanistan.

Melinda Good, the World Bank’s official in Afghanistan, mentioned that the International Development Association has developed a clear and effective framework in the past 18 months to allocate this amount for employment sectors, especially for women and girls in Afghanistan.

“With the new funding, these projects will expand their activities in rural and urban areas, provide more livelihood opportunities for women, and offer employment and services to returning Afghans,” Melinda said.

According to Melinda Good, with this assistance, the International Development Association (IDA) can continue providing its services in various sectors to the people of Afghanistan in six sectors and 26 provinces. So far, this project has created short-term employment for over 776,000 Afghan families, benefiting approximately 5.4 million individuals. Additionally, 92,200 vulnerable families in Afghanistan, including those headed by women, have received cash and in-kind assistance from this project.

These contributions come at a time when recently, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Afghanistan (OCHA) announced that about 23.7 million people, including 12.3 million children in Afghanistan, will require humanitarian assistance in 2024.
