The drone and missile attacks by Iran on Israel have elicited various reactions and opinions from high-ranking officials in Afghanistan.
Dr Abdullah Abdullah, the former executive chairman of the government in Afghanistan, stated that Israel, by attacking the Iranian consulate in Syria, has violated international law, international conventions on diplomatic immunity, and international norms. Iran’s response to Israel is considered a defensive action and a reaction to the violation of Iran’s national sovereignty.
Mr Abdullah posted a message on the social media platform X, stating: “The continued ruthless killing and massacre of innocent people in Gaza by Israel, targeting children, women, employees of international organizations, doctors, and relief workers, is the main cause of crisis and tension at the regional and global levels.”
He further stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran shares religious, historical, and cultural ties with neighbouring Afghanistan and currently hosts millions of Afghan citizens. Any action by Israel against Iran and the escalation of tensions will directly impact the situation in Afghanistan and have unpredictable and unfavourable consequences for the region and global peace and security.
Amrullah Saleh, the former deputy to Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, the former president of Afghanistan, stated that Iran’s response to Israel’s violation of the embassy of this country in Damascus, which is considered under the international laws as Iranian territory, was both legitimate and Iran’s undeniable right.
Mr Saleh added: “Iran is a great nation with deep roots and a proud historical heritage. Silence for such a government nation is certainly a disgrace. Blessed are the nations that have been able to overcome internal differences and protect their geographical and spiritual borders. Both the courage to act and the courageous action have been displayed. We hope this war does not escalate.”
Iran’s missile attacks in response to the Israeli attack two weeks ago on the consulate of this country in Damascus, the capital of Syria, have taken place. Although Iranian media claim that 150 missiles have hit their intended targets, the Israeli army has stated that most of the missiles have been intercepted.
