The members of the United Nations Security Council, in a meeting on Friday, March 15, extended the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for a period of one year.

With unanimous agreement, the Security Council emphasized the presence of UNAMA in Afghanistan and extended the mission of this entity until March 17, 2025.

The draft resolution was prepared by Japan, emphasizing full support for UNAMA. Ambassador Yamazaki, the representative of Japan and the current President of the Security Council, stated in his address that his country will continue its efforts to assist the people of Afghanistan and support the role of UNAMA.

The Japanese representative added in this meeting that given the dire human rights situation in Afghanistan, especially the situation of women and girls, the role of UNAMA is more important and necessary than ever before.

“Continuing this mission is essential and necessary as the international community seeks to deepen interaction and build trust with the Taliban group,” said Yamazaki.

According to Mr. Yamazaki, extension of UNAMA’s mission demonstrates the United Nations’ strong commitment and unwavering support from the Security Council to continue working for the people of Afghanistan.

The objective of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) is defined as assisting the people of this country. Every year, following the Bonn Conference for Afghanistan, the mission of this entity is evaluated at the Security Council meeting and extended for another year based on the needs of the people of this country.
