Jan 25 (Afghanistan Women’s News Agency) – The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution in December 2018, declaring January 24th as the International Day of Education to honor the role of education in fostering global peace and sustainable development.

Afghanistan is passing through January 24, 2024, while girls have been deprived of the right to education during the Taliban’s rule in the country for the past two years. The Afghan Women’s Political Participation Network has urged the United Nations to take action against the blatant violation of girls’ right to education by the Taliban in a statement issued on the occasion of the International Day of Education. The statement emphasizes that education is a key factor in sustainable development, including poverty reduction, gender equality, improved health, and economic advancement. However, women and girls in Afghanistan are facing numerous challenges and are deprived of education and learning.

The network further stated, “Afghanistan has the highest illiteracy rate, with 5 million people deprived of the right to education, of which 80% are girls. The statement also emphasizes that over 30% of girls have no access to even primary education.”

The Afghan Women’s Political Participation Network has stated: “We urge the United Nations and the global community to take decisive and serious action against the blatant human rights violations and atrocities committed by the Taliban in Afghanistan against women and girls so that the fate of women and girls in Afghanistan does not further descend into destruction.”

This comes as, in addition to the deprivation of girls from the right to education, the network also discussed the issue of changing the educational curriculum by the Taliban group.
