Manizha Bakhtari, the Afghan Ambassador to Austria, addressed the issue of women’s social and political rights in Afghanistan during the presentation of the “Rabia Balkhi” award.

Ms. Bakhtari stated at the ceremony that the Taliban, through policies of gender segregation and gender apartheid, deny women’s rights and suppress Afghan women.

These statements highlight the tensions and challenges that women in Afghanistan face, emphasizing the need for attention and support from the international community.

Furthermore, Ms. Bakhtari added that nearly 1100 years have passed since the bitter history of Rabia Balkhi, yet women and girls in Afghanistan still fall victim to traditions and stereotypes. Currently, girls are not only deprived of schools and universities but also lack the right to raise their voices.

Gender apartheid is one of the major challenges faced by women in Afghanistan, representing systematic and widespread discrimination imposed against women and girls in the country. Recent efforts have been made towards recognizing gender apartheid in Afghanistan.

A United Nations meeting on the situation of women in Afghanistan, titled “Fighting Gender Apartheid,” was held on the sidelines of the seventy-eighth session of the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York a few weeks ago.

Following widespread protests by women regarding the recognition of gender apartheid in Afghanistan, this is the first time that the United Nations has officially used the term “gender apartheid” about the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan.
