The director of education of the Taliban group in Balkh province, who was speaking at a ceremony for the distribution of educational packages and food items donated to 125 seminaries -religious schools- in this province, expressed gratitude for the provision of this assistance by an aid organization; in Balkh province, there are close to 1400 active seminaries, including 656 seminaries with dormitories.
According to Abdul Jalil Shahidkhel, the director of education of the Taliban group in Balkh, in this assistance program, food items were distributed to 75 seminaries with dormitories, 2130 copies of the Quran were provided for 30 schools, and textbooks were distributed to the remaining schools.
This local Taliban official did not elaborate on how seminaries are included in the aid distribution process, nor did he provide precise statistics on the students of seminaries in Balkh province. However, he stated that this aid program was carried out in coordination with the Taliban’s Ministry of Interior for the targeted schools.
Following the fall of the republic, the Taliban regime has focused its efforts on increasing seminaries, even converting some properties belonging to officials of the previous regime into seminaries, such as the Mitra Television building associated with Ata Mohammad Noor in Balkh.
The director of the Taliban’s education department in Balkh had previously designated 623 active seminaries last year and now reports the existence of 1400 seminaries in Balkh province.
