The Alama Faizani Cultural Center and several book vendors launched a book exhibition at Kabul University to promote and encourage people to read and engage with books.
This two-day exhibition commenced yesterday, Monday, under the auspices of the Baihaqi Publications Directorate of the Ministry of Information and Culture of the Taliban regime, in celebration of Book Week. However, it notably unfolded without the presence of women and girls at Kabul University.
At this exhibition, officials from the Alama Faizani Library showcased the works of Alama Faizani, a religious scholar, and various books in the fields of politics, economics, law, literature, and philosophy.
Meanwhile, some book vendors in Kabul lament the lack of interest in reading and book purchasing, stating that since the fall of the previous government, the culture of reading has gradually dissipated, with fewer people paying attention to reading and books. Particularly, there are very few girls seen buying books or borrowing them for reading.
In addition to the people’s apathy towards reading, the Taliban have also banned the sale of works by Dr. Ali Shariati, Dr. Abdolkarim Soroush, Yuval Noah Harari, and several critics’ books about the Taliban. Those found selling these books are dealt with severely.
Nevertheless, some visitors, while pleased, have hailed the organization of such exhibitions as a valuable step towards improving the culture of reading.
